Bizarrely, while my own pictures make me shudder, my children’s first passport photos are two of my favourite of both my children. Both seem to stare happily out of the frame, as if they know there is adventure on the horizon. Now my children are older, they are hugely proud of their passports, they just wish all destinations gave out stamps! Penny

Your child’s first passport is a huge milestone.

My biggest problem was trying to stop M smiling. She was such a camera addict even then, she couldn’t figure out, at 6 months old, that she shouldn’t smile! Helen

From finding somewhere local that knows how to take a decent shot of a wriggly infant, to filling in the form correctly, to waiting anxiously for it to arrive, to setting off for the airport, with a whole heap of extra stuff you never needed as a twosome, along with your very precious bundle, and one more passport than the last time you left the country.

A passport holder is a lovely gift and a great way to ensure everyone in the family always picks up the right passport. I’ve heard some stories about failed business trips with Mums and Dads attempting to travel with their kids’ passports. In the early sleep deprived baby days, it would be quite easy to forget baby’s passport, which is where a bit of ceremony, via a hard to miss passport cover comes in handy.

If your baby is anything like mine were, while you are waiting in the queue for the plane, s/he will discover their first passport is a teething device like no other. A case can be a practical thing too.
