The Earth by Day Earth by night globe is guaranteed to spark some conversations about the world with your children

Space In Your Case is all about family travel. We pick out the aspects of our trips that we think will appeal most to kids, and we tell you what to expect from the places we visit when you go there as a family. Sometimes though, something irresistible comes along that is only for the younger members of the family, and when we were sent this globe, we knew we had to pass it on to you. Here’s what Helen’s family thought of the night light that switches children on to the countries of the world.

A globe to inspire a love of travel

The Earth by Day Earth by Night globe, from Brainstorm Ltd, looks like a standard globe, and in itself would be a useful addition to any family interested in seeing the world. But switch it on in the dark, and it becomes a whole new experience.

The Earth by Day Earth by Night globe sparks children's curiosity about the countries of the world

Seeing how the world looks at night, from a distance, is fascinating, and even the adults were engrossed with finding cities, coastlines, and islands in the middle of vast oceans of darkness. My daughter chose to sleep with Europe facing her, because of the abundance of coloured light she could see; but not before the whole family had marvelled at the size of undeveloped Africa. It sparked further conversations that lasted into the next day, when we delved into our Lonely Planet Kids Travel Book, to answer the questions about which countries had the least light, and why. One tiny light in the middle of the Pacific Ocean revealed itself as belonging to the Marshall Islands, of Bikini Atoll fame, and we giggled about how the Atoll was named.

We noticed too, that vast swathes of China had no light, and talked about how the country’s massive population is concentrated in a comparatively small section of it. Next, we got to talking about America, lit like a pinball machine until you get just over the border of Canada. It really makes you think, even as adults, about the things which of course you know, but don’t often dwell on. And it totally opened the children’s eyes to further discussions on what they know about the countries they’ve seen, and have yet to visit.

I have a feeling that this globe might inspire some exciting additions to our family travel bucket list!
